Polygon POL

Apps, payments, and network fees.

Polygon provides blockchain infrastructure for applications and payments. POL replaced MATIC as the native gas and staking token on Polygon Chain.

What is Polygon?

Polygon is a blockchain ecosystem. POL is its native token, with gas and staking roles on Polygon Chain, historically known as Polygon PoS. The old MATIC name can still appear in historical records, so the token and network should be identified carefully.

Do not choose an asset by its ticker alone. Legacy MATIC, POL, and bridged versions may involve different networks and requirements.

Why people pay attention

  • Applications

Developers can build services within the ecosystem.

  • Network fees

POL is used for transaction gas on Polygon Chain.

  • Staking

POL also has a role in network security.

Origins & development

Polygon’s PoS network changed its native gas and staking token from MATIC to POL in September 2024. This token transition was not the launch of the entire Polygon project.
